Living and Learning at the Sat Yoga Ashram
Skanda
Dear Fellow Seekers,
My name is Skanda, which was given to me by the great teacher Shunyamurti. It means the god of war against the demons of the ego.
I have had the blessing of being here for 17 months of great growth and understanding of my true Self.
This is a Wisdom School in the truest sense, where you will be opened to seeing what has been underlying your way of approaching life and its deeper meaning.
I came as a Sevadhari , and it has been very rewarding and sometimes challenging.
One of my responsibilities in seva (selfless service) is working in the greenhouse, which is where everything is home-grown, well planned, and carefully managed. I harvest vegetables, do bed and plant care, helping to make sure the crops can grow fluidly. There is a great feeling in working with the earth and crops that is grounding and gives a deep sense of presence.
I also work in food processing, helping prepare the crops from the greenhouse for cooking and eating. I also help out in the kitchen, which is very well structured in teamwork and organization. This, to me, highlights the real meaning of community and cooperation.
All of this is done with great care, love, and selfless devotion to Shiva and all.
The teachings by Shunya are very thoughtful and have impacted me deeply. I feel I am wiser and more aware of my place in the world. I am passionate about and very moved by all the teachings, but the insights into the ego complex have really changed how I view my thoughts and actions.
It can and will be challenging at times, and one must embrace what is reflected to oneself with honesty and humility. I promise it will be uplifting and life-changing, with incredibly valuable self-knowledge.
We have regular satsangs, gyana videos (replays of satsangs and retreats), as well as documentaries and occasional movie nights.
Each is mind- and heart-opening, as well as fascinating and thought-provoking.
We all have regular Atmanology sessions with our senior and very learned yogis, who have truly embodied the teachings and done the inner work as well.
These sessions are revolutionary as far as I am concerned and, although I have much more to learn, have been the most uplifting and inspiring lessons I have had in my life.
Everything here is done with honesty, transparency, and the utmost integrity.
I strongly invite all who seek inner truth, growth, and liberation to explore this wonderful journey into your return to Shiva (which you never left).
Blessings and love,
Humbly, your brother,
Skanda

King Lear and The God of Nature
A central pillar of the Sat Yoga Wisdom School curriculum is our weekly Study Group, taught by Radha Ma. In the Study Group that inspired this article, Radha Ma delved deeply into the God of Nature. As I listened, it occurred to me that the inner struggle between The God of Nature and its antithesis—the anti-god of Nature, Savagery—forms the central conflict at the core of King Lear, Shakespeare’s great alchemical masterpiece.
