Neo-Bhakti Rock Night at the “Now or Never!” Retreat
Saturday night at the ashram is no ordinary night. Last week, during our Now or Never! Open the Gates of the Heart! online retreat, Parvati and Hanuman (our house band) opened a portal through sound: a rock concert for the ages in which the anthems of a bygone world were alchemized—infused with the timeless through Shunyamurti’s life-giving lyrics and returned as a living current of grace.
Shunyamurti introduced the offering:
“Tonight we have some divine entertainment for you that will hopefully bring about the blissful letting go of all earthbound worries and conceptualizations of an ego that has not yet been completely absorbed in the blissful light…”
Songs
- God Will Have to Light My Fire
(Taken from The Doors, “Light My Fire”) - Dark Light
(Taken from Jefferson Airplane, “White Rabbit”) - God’s Nectar Jar
(Taken from The Doors, “Alabama Song”) - Inner Sun
(Taken from Harry Belafonte, “Island in the Sun”)
These were not performances. They were invocations—each lyric dissolving the old psychic imprints of the original songs and re-inscribing them with a higher telos: surrender, awakening, Self-realization.
After the concert Shunya praised the musicians:
“Beautiful virtuosity, incredible music . . . a very challenging repertoire, beautifully integrated and expressed. I thought this was a very moving concert.”
When Shunyamurti opened the floor, Nirgun shared:
“There’s something about coupling these songs with the sublimated lyrics. It does something very magical. It’s almost like the nectar jar had been drunk from and was being offered to us—a transmission of their love and the harmony, the music, the teachings. It overwhelms the heart with joy, delight, and gratitude.”
Shunya closed the evening:
“Songs that were very powerful in the originals are now magically sublimated into another octave… creating a spring of vitality and inspiring the soul to take on Naraka and reach Narayana status—realizing the immediate accessibility of the Supreme Real that you are.”
